ONE OF THE RAIN TREES (SAMANEA SAMAN) THAT FELL, DIED

30 SEPTEMBER 2021 - A Rain Tree (Samanea Saman) JTT1079 near Jeti Taman Tasik Taiping which collapsed on 20 January 2018, was confirmed to have rotted and died. The 136 -year -old tree fell on the road to the lake due to the failure of its root system (point of failure: structural and anchor roots).

The main root that strengthens and holds the stand of this tree has rotted. The main root which was about 1.5 meters from the root collar had rotted with an estimated cavity about 8 inches in diameter. This tree has long been over-strengthened by these large roots that grow towards the parking lot. While most of the main branches and stems grow inclined towards the road and the lake.

The Heritage Tree Inspection and Evaluation Report at Taman Tasik Taiping released by a Certified Arborist in 2019 has stated that the tree is expected to decline the strength of its surviving branches and die in a few months or a year and needs to be monitored immediately. The action of installing proping and treating the trees was also made as suggested by the arborist.

The action of replanting the Rain trees as a measure to replace dead trees was also done in 2019 which was completed by YBrs. Tuan Haji Borhan bin Abdul Halim, former President of Taiping Municipal Council. A total of three tree trunks were planted in the area near the original location of the fallen or dead tree. This dead tree will be used as a ‘sculpture tree’ wooden object in Taman Tasik Taiping. Meanwhile, the existing proping will be reused on trees in need such as JTT 1076 near the public toilet area (Parking D).
